Community Garden Project
Dear Friends,
I have a new community garden project idea. A few weeks ago I went to Santa Rosa to Christ United Methodist Church (UMC). They have a ¾ acre garden which includes veggies, flowers, herbs and fruit trees. The produce is given to the hungry people in the area. Volunteers from 4 different churches and a synagogue are the volunteers keeping the garden growing. It is a beautiful garden. This project has been going for over 20 years so is well established. Once a year they hold a plant sale and gross around $15,000 which pays for the supplies and then some. Now that it is well established the anticipation is strong with a line around the church to buy the plants. We were there the day before the sale so they were hustling to get everything done. On Thursdays Elisha’s Pantry is open to hand out the bags of produce. Grocery stores also provide canned goods and other necessities.
As I thought about the space at Davis UMC which is just sitting there, I was again nudged to do something with this land. I have proposed a similar plan to our Trustees. They support this idea. I am now looking for people who might be interested in this venture. Gwen Oliver, Master Gardener and a friend of mine, and I are putting out feelers to see who might be interested in this sort of project. We want to toss around ideas and formulate a plan. This project will start small and grow it over the next few years. Gwen and I met with Emily Griswold from the Central Park Garden to see how she has done so much in the last 3 years.
This project is more than just gardening. It is a spiritual connection with the earth and with caring for God’s children.
