Fish Out of Water is the third video in Davis United Methodist’s June Series on LGBT related topics. Director Ky Dickens takes on two controversial topics in one film in this documentary about religion and homosexuality. A former sorority girl at Vanderbilt University, Dickens came out of the closet her senior year. She’s heard all the Biblical passages implying that being gay is like buying an express ticket to Hell, yet her understanding of the Good Book doesn’t necessarily jive with the interpretations of the mainstream religious masses. In this light hearted film, Dickens dissects seven passages from Bible verses that are most often used to condemn homosexuality and same-sex marriage. Dickens talked with ministers on both sides of the debate surrounding homosexuality and the Bible for the film.
